Prohibited Medicines and Controlled Drugs in the UAE: A Complete Guide

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has some of the strictest drug control laws in the world. What may be a common prescription or over-the-counter medication in your country could be classified as a controlled or prohibited drug in Dubai. Travelers entering the UAE must be fully aware of the rules to avoid severe penalties, which may include fines, imprisonment, or deportation.

MOHAP Approval for Controlled Medicines

If you are carrying controlled or semi-controlled medication into the UAE, you must apply for prior approval from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). This applies to both UAE residents and international travelers.

Travelers: Allowed to bring up to a 3-month supply of prescribed medicine with approval.
Residents: Can import narcotic and controlled medicines with approval, using Emirates ID.

Without approval, travelers must declare all such medicines at UAE entry ports and show a valid prescription and medical report.

What Are Controlled Medicines?
